Gilsonite for Oil & Gas Drilling Fluids

Gilsonite for Oil & Gas Drilling Fluids

Zagros Gilsonite supplies high-quality Gilsonite for oil-based and water-based drilling fluids. As a direct mine owner, we deliver consistent, API-grade Gilsonite that improves fluid loss control, seals lost circulation zones, stabilizes shale, and performs in high-pressure/high-temperature wells.

Whether you are drilling shallow development wells or ultra-deep HPHT prospects, our Gilsonite helps reduce non-productive time, protect reservoirs, and lower total drilling costs.

Why Use Gilsonite in Drilling Fluids?

Gilsonite is a natural, carbonaceous hydrocarbon resin with a high softening point and excellent thermal stability. Unlike many additives, it softens and deforms downhole rather than melting completely. This allows it to extrude into fractures, pore spaces, and bedding planes, forming a tight seal that strengthens the wellbore.

Key benefits:

· Effective in both oil-based mud (OBM) and water-based mud (WBM)
· Thermally stable up to 400°F+ (204°C+)
· Reduces fluid loss and filter cake thickness
· Seals fractures and permeable zones
· Improves shale stability and wellbore integrity
· Cost-effective compared to many synthetic additives

Key Applications

1. Fluid Loss Control

Gilsonite reduces API and HTHP fluid loss by forming a thin, low-permeability filter cake. This minimizes filtrate invasion, protects producing formations, and reduces differential sticking.

Benefits:

· Up to 75% fluid loss reduction under HPHT conditions
· Thinner filter cake
· Less formation damage
· Better reservoir protection

2. Lost Circulation Mitigation

Gilsonite acts as a deformable bridging agent for fractures, vugs, and high-permeability zones. It conforms to irregular fracture shapes, creating a durable seal that withstands differential pressure.

Best for:

· Naturally fractured reservoirs
· Depleted zones
· High-permeability sands
· Deepwater and extended-reach wells

Can be combined with graphite, calcium carbonate, or cellulose fibers for severe loss scenarios.

3. Shale Stabilization & Wellbore Strengthening

Gilsonite penetrates shale micro-fractures and bonds the rock matrix, helping prevent sloughing, washouts, and hole enlargement. It also creates a physical barrier that reduces water interaction with reactive clays.

Results:

· Less borehole enlargement
· Reduced hole washout
· Improved wellbore stability
· Better drilling efficiency

4. Lubrication & Torque Reduction

Gilsonite improves lubricity in water-based and oil-based systems. This reduces torque and drag, improves rate of penetration (ROP), and extends equipment life.
